October 10 to November 28, 2014
An exhibition of 30 original, handmade prints from two Swansea Print Workshop collections inspired by the world-famous Swansea-born poet.
As part of the 2014 worldwide celebrations to mark the centenary of Dylan Thomas’ birth, Swansea Print Workshop are exhibiting together two collections of original prints at Oriel y Bont, the University’s Art Gallery on the Treforest Campus.
The first collection was published in 2003 to mark the fiftieth anniversary of Dylan Thomas’ death. Twelve Wales-based printmakers responded to Dylan Thomas’ 1930s poem, ‘especially when the October wind’ – a poem with particular resonance to the Swansea landscape, the town of his birth and the source of his inspiration.

The printmakers and artists involved were Sheila Clark, Lucy Donald, Elissa Evans, Jackie Ford, Sally Hands, Sarah Hopkins, Sue Kelsall, Ruth Parmiter, Judith Stroud, Ceri Thomas, Peter Visscher and Alan Williams. The boxed set includes a colophon signed by Dylan Thomas’ daughter Aeronwy Thomas.
The second collection, called ‘deialogau DYLAN THOMAS dialogues’ was published in 2013. It reveals artists’ responses to the theme of belonging. Working with selected texts from Dylan Thomas and contemporary writers Rachel Trezise and Maggie Shipstead, winners of the international ‘Dylan Thomas Prize’, the printmakers journey to old haunts and make new discoveries of self and place.
They remember childhood experiences, make fresh connections with familiar spaces, consider the role of artist and writer in society and rediscover the value of family, community and country. The eighteen Wales-based artists involved are David Barron, Lynne Bebb, Lucy Donald, Alan Figg, Jackie Ford, Graeme Galvin, Rosy Ind, Jane Jones, Hannah Lawson, Lesley Lillywhite, Robert Macdonald, Ruth Parmiter, Carys Roberts, Kara Seaman, Bridget Stevens, Judith Stroud, Adele Vye and Pip Woolf.
Both collections consist of limited edition original prints inked and printed by hand using a range of traditional presses and hand-made papers. These are not to be confused with giclée prints which are high quality reproductions. They are held in National Collections and they can be bought as boxed sets or, in a special offer for 2014, as individual prints. There are accompanying catalogues for sale too.
